Winter Furnace Maintenance Checklist for SoCal Homeowners

Southern California winters are mild compared to the rest of the country, but that does not mean your furnace gets a pass. In fact, the intermittent use pattern common in SoCal — where furnaces sit idle for months then run hard during cold snaps — creates its own set of reliability challenges. A system that worked fine last winter may have developed issues during its extended off-season.

Check the Heat Exchanger

The heat exchanger is the most critical safety component in your furnace. A cracked heat exchanger can leak carbon monoxide into your home. This is not something homeowners can inspect themselves — it requires a professional with a combustion analyzer and visual inspection tools.

Heat exchangers can develop stress fractures from repeated heating and cooling cycles. If your furnace is over 15 years old, this inspection becomes especially important.

Replace the Filter and Check Airflow

If you ran your AC through summer without changing the filter, your furnace is starting the season at a disadvantage. Install a fresh filter and visually inspect all supply and return vents in your home. Move furniture away from vents and make sure nothing is blocking airflow.

Restricted airflow is the leading cause of furnace overheating and premature failure. A clean filter and unobstructed vents are your first line of defense.

Test Your Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Every home with a gas furnace should have carbon monoxide detectors outside each sleeping area. Test the battery and verify the sensor is within its useful life (most CO detectors expire after 5–7 years regardless of battery status).

California law requires CO detectors in all homes with fuel-burning appliances. This is not negotiable — it is a life-safety issue.

Inspect the Flue and Venting

The exhaust flue carries combustion gases out of your home. Check for visible disconnections, rust, or holes in the flue pipe. For high-efficiency condensing furnaces, inspect the PVC drain line for clogs — a blocked drain can cause the furnace to lock out.

Bird nests, debris, and deteriorated flue caps are common issues after a long summer. A blocked flue is a carbon monoxide hazard.
