How to Prepare Your AC for a Southern California Summer
2026-03-20
Southern California summers are no joke. Inland Empire temperatures regularly push past 110Β°F, and even coastal communities experience heat waves that push air conditioning systems to their absolute limits. The worst time to discover your AC has a problem is during the first major heat wave of the season. A little preparation goes a long way.

Change Your Filter β Seriously
This is the single most impactful thing a homeowner can do. A clogged filter restricts airflow, forces your system to work harder, increases energy consumption, and can cause the evaporator coil to freeze. In Southern California's dusty environment, filters need replacing every 30β60 days during cooling season.
Use a quality pleated filter rated MERV 8β11. Higher isn't always better β MERV 13+ filters can actually restrict airflow on older residential systems that were not designed for them.
Clear the Outdoor Condenser
Your condenser unit needs adequate clearance to exhaust heat. Trim back vegetation to maintain at least 24 inches of clear space on all sides. Remove any debris, leaves, or dirt that has accumulated around the base.
Gently rinse the condenser coils with a garden hose (turn the system off first). Compressed dirt on the coils acts like insulation, preventing heat transfer and reducing your system's efficiency by up to 30%.
Test Before You Need It
Run your system on a mild day in early spring. Let it cycle for 30 minutes and check for any unusual sounds, odors, or performance issues. Catching problems in March is far less stressful than discovering them during a July heat wave.
Check your thermostat settings and verify the system responds correctly to temperature adjustments. If you have a programmable or smart thermostat, update your cooling schedule for the longer, hotter days ahead.
Schedule Professional Maintenance
Even with diligent homeowner maintenance, professional service catches issues you cannot see. A technician will check refrigerant levels, test electrical connections, verify amp draws on motors, and inspect the evaporator coil for microbial growth.
HVAC contractors get slammed from June through September. Schedule your tune-up in March or April to get preferred appointment times and avoid emergency rates.
Know When to Call a Pro
If your system is blowing lukewarm air, cycling on and off every few minutes, making grinding or banging noises, or leaking water around the indoor unit, call for service immediately. These symptoms rarely resolve on their own and tend to get worse β and more expensive β with time.
We offer same-day AC diagnostics for $49, waived with approved repair. Call (760) 391-2458 to schedule.
